Privacy Policy
This policy explains what newsrag, operated by Dawson Geist, collects about you and why. In short: only what's needed to run your account, no advertising, no analytics, and we don't sell personal data.
What we collect
- Account: your username and a one-way hash of your password (we can't read your password), your plan, when you last signed in, and whether you're an operator.
- Your work: boards, pins, notes, outlines, stories and assistant answers you create. They're private to your account.
- Searches: the claims you search are stored without your account, to cache the models' verdicts and count how often a claim is searched. A claim may be listed as a "popular search" for other users only after at least three different people have searched it; we keep an unreadable code per person for that count, not your account id.
- Usage: how many seconds of language-model time your account used per day, for plan limits and capacity.
- Payments: handled by Stripe and Link; we never see your card number. We store your Stripe customer and subscription ids, your plan and the subscription's status. Stripe (and Link, part of Stripe) process your payment details under Stripe's privacy policy.
- Technical logs: our web proxy records each request (IP address, time, address requested, which includes the text of searches, and browser type) to protect the service from abuse. These logs are deleted after 7 days. Addresses that attack the service may be shared with CrowdSec's community blocklist.
- Cookies: one sign-in cookie, needed to keep you signed in. No tracking or advertising cookies. The boards page remembers a few display preferences in your browser's local storage.
How we use it
To run the service for you: sign-in, your boards, your plan and billing, fair sharing of capacity between users, security, and fixing problems. We don't use your data for advertising, don't sell it, and don't share it except with the processors above (Stripe, Link) or where the law requires.
Where it's kept
On our own server in the United States, behind a proxy that holds no account data. Encrypted backups are kept on an offline drive for up to 12 months.
How long
Account data and your work: while your account exists. After deletion it leaves backups as they age out (up to 12 months). Proxy logs: 7 days. Search counts: kept, without your account.
Your choices and rights
You can see your account and usage on the account page. To get a copy of your data, correct it or delete your account and everything you made, email dawson@newsrag.us; we'll act within 30 days. Depending on where you live (for example California or the EU), you may have further rights, which we'll honor.
Children
newsrag isn't for people under 18, and we don't knowingly collect their data.
Changes
We'll post changes here and, for material ones, tell you by email or on your account page before they take effect.
